What is Cevapcici?

Cevapcici (pronounced "tche-vap-tchi-tchi") are small, spicy minced meat rolls that are popular from Bosnia and Serbia to Hungary and Croatia. They are often served with ajvar, onions and pita bread. The taste is rich, spicy and full of character – thanks to spices like paprika, garlic, black pepper and sometimes a pinch of cayenne.

The Cevapcici spice mix originally comes from the southern parts of the Pannonian Basin on the border between Hungary and Serbia.

Recipe: Cevapcici with ready-made spice mix

Ingredients (4 servings)

  • 500 g minced beef (or mixed minced meat)
  • 2–3 tbsp Cevapcici spice mix from Ungerskmat.se
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil of your choice
  • ½ grated yellow onion
  • ½ - 1 dl carbonated water – for extra fluffy mince
  • Butter or oil for frying or grilling

Do this:

  1. Mix the minced meat with the spice mixture, oil, onion and carbonated water.
  2. Work together until the batter is firm but juicy.
  3. Form small oblong rolls (about 8 cm long).
  4. Let rest in the cold for 20 minutes so the flavors can settle.
  5. Fry or grill over medium heat for 8–10 minutes until nicely browned and cooked through.

Serving tips

Serve your cevapcici with:

  • Paprika paste Édes Piros or Erös Pista (mild or strong)
